Digital technologies are embedded in UK vocational and further education, particularly in apprenticeship delivery, where assessment, competency tracking, and reflective practice are central. OneFile, a virtual learning environment (VLE), supports learners in gathering workplace evidence, monitoring progress against occupational standards, and engaging in structured reflection in blended learning contexts. In sectors such as health and social care, it plays a role in documenting professional practice, recording off-the-job training, and enabling communication between learners, tutors, and assessors.

OneFile operates as both a pedagogical tool and an administrative mechanism within broader systems of accountability and quality assurance. This dual function generates tension between enhancing learning and compliance requirements. Policy guidance from the Department for Education (DfE, 2019) and inspection frameworks from Ofsted stress that digital technologies should enrich learning rather than reduce it to bureaucratic processes.

Research in technology-enhanced learning suggests learning is socially and materially distributed across physical, digital, and relational spaces (Chang-Tik et al., 2026; Elkington and Irons, 2025; Obuobisa-Darko, 2025), emphasising co-construction of knowledge through interaction. While this perspective challenges individualised models of learning, it may overstate coherence in distributed systems. In practice, institutional constraints, assessment regimes, and platform architectures reimpose boundaries fragmenting learning experiences.

From an interpretivist standpoint, learning is socially constructed and context-dependent. Drawing on my organisation’s workplace experience informs and contextualises this assignment, providing insights into how these dynamics are enacted in educational settings. OneFile promotes standardisation but risks reinforcing performative, compliance-driven practices unless re-mediated through relational practice.
