Building Stronger Teams Through Triple-Loop Learning.
In today’s complex and ever-changing professional environments, leadership is no longer just about solving problems—it’s about transforming how we think, act, and lead. One powerful framework that has reshaped my understanding of leadership is Triple-Loop Learning.
Triple-Loop Learning builds on the idea that learning happens in layers:
Single-Loop Learning: Are we doing things right? This level focuses on improving actions and correcting errors within existing frameworks.
Double-Loop Learning: Are we doing the right things?
Here, we begin to question the assumptions, values, and policies that guide our actions.
Triple-Loop Learning: How do we decide what is right?
This deepest level challenges the very norms and values that shape our thinking. It’s about transforming our mindset and the culture of our teams or organisations.
Why It Matters for Leadership
As a leader, I’ve found that Triple-Loop Learning encourages a shift from reactive problem-solving to transformational thinking. It invites us to reflect not just on what we do, but on how and why we do it—and whether those reasons still serve our goals and values.
In team settings, this approach fosters:
Deeper trust and dialogue
Shared ownership of values
A culture of continuous reflection and growth
