Autism and Dyslexia: Intersections and Distinctions.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and dyslexia are both classified as neurodevelopmental conditions, but they affect learning and cognition in distinct ways. Dyslexia is primarily characterised by persistent difficulties in phonological processing, decoding, and fluent word recognition, which impact literacy development (Shaywitz, 2005). Autism, by contrast, is defined by challenges in social communication, alongside restricted or repetitive patterns of behaviour and interests (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). Despite these differences, there is evidence of comorbidity and overlapping features that complicate both diagnosis and educational provision.
Co-occurrence and prevalence
Research suggests that individuals on the autism spectrum may present with elevated rates of reading and language difficulties, including dyslexic profiles. Some studies estimate that between 20–30% of children with ASD experience reading disorders, with a subset meeting criteria for dyslexia (Keenan et al., 2020). This co-occurrence may stem from shared neurocognitive vulnerabilities, particularly in phonological processing, working memory, and executive functioning.
Cognitive and linguistic overlaps
Children with ASD often display uneven literacy profiles: some develop advanced decoding skills (hyperlexia) but struggle with reading comprehension, while others experience phonological deficits more typical of dyslexia (Frith and Happé, 1994). When autism and dyslexia co-occur, difficulties in both word-level decoding and higher-level comprehension may compound, leading to more severe and complex learning needs. Furthermore, pragmatic language difficulties associated with autism can exacerbate the challenges of dyslexia by limiting vocabulary growth and text comprehension.
Educational implications
The intersection of autism and dyslexia raises important questions for pedagogy and support. A child with dyslexia alone may benefit primarily from structured literacy interventions (systematic phonics, multisensory approaches), whereas a child with both autism and dyslexia may require these interventions alongside explicit teaching of comprehension, pragmatic language, and flexible use of assistive technology. The overlap highlights the need for personalised educational plans that integrate evidence-based strategies for both conditions.
