Mapping Reflection

How Moon’s Framework Shaped My Evolving Practice
Framework Shaped My Evolving Practice.

Engaging with the work of Moon (2000) has been a turning point in how I approach reflective practice. Her proposition—that the various processes of reflection can be systematically mapped—has helped me bring structure and intention to what was once a largely instinctive process.

Previously, my reflections were reactive and informal—something I did on the go. But understanding Moon’s framework allowed me to identify distinct stages in reflective thinking and apply them more strategically to my professional development. This shift has deepened not just what I reflect on, but how I reflect.

This approach has also encouraged me to explore emotional reflexivity—examining not only my thoughts and actions, but also the feelings that accompany them. Emotional insight, coupled with pedagogical theories, has helped me better understand the impact of my leadership style, communication, and decision-making on others.

Ultimately, this reflective mapping has supported more intentional and sustainable changes in my practice. By grounding reflection in theory and self-awareness, I’m better equipped to lead, teach, and evolve in complex and ever-changing educational environments.
